SHOW ME YOUR QUEER is a photography project that creates an alternate reality of queer beauty, fun and lightheartedness, one that mainstream media rarely portrays. Indeed, LGBTQIA+ representation in mass media often comes down to a mark of ‘edginess’ produced from a heteronormative discourse, or else, it focuses on the hardships of queerness; but queer existence is not only eclipsed by struggles either. Show me your queer offers a reclamation of ‘queer radical joy,’ an opportunity for self-expression and collective celebration, exploring identity beyond heteronormative visibility and pushing for representation in a society that systemically attempts to erase ‘happy’ queer experiences. Besides, in a time of isolation like the one we experienced in 2020, it became ever more important to combine a sense of optimism with the disheartening reality of a global pandemic that stripped the queer community of its safe spaces where we can freely express ourselves. So, this is what came to define the concept for this project: celebration. In Show me your queer, each photograph speaks to the identity of the person in it in a playful way: all the participants were asked to describe a concept, a characteristic or an aspect that represents them and their queer identity, which were then staged and captured through the medium of photography. Shot in Denmark, Show me your queer showcases the vibrancy and diversity of the queer community in Copenhagen. A collaborative project between photographer Gloria Berenice Moreno and creative director Pau Beckmann Nielsen.
